The One That Sounds Kinda Like My Other Blog Post...

One thing I made myself promise about reviving Diary of a Mad, Fat Woman was that it couldn't just be another blog that said the same stuff I post on my daily life blog:  Life and Times of Jo.  It wouldn't be worth it if I was just writing the same stuff in two different places.

That blog has to be about life in general.

This blog has to be about trying to lose weight.

But, what happens when I get an urge or spark of motivation that leads from the topic I wrote about in my other blog?  Well, I guess posts like this happen.

It's not going to be exactly the same, but if you've read this post after reading my other post from this morning and start getting a crazy deja vu feeling...don't worry, you're not going crazy... you have read about some of this stuff already.

This weekend I had a total blast doing fun stuff with the family.  We played miniature golf on Saturday, and yesterday my big ol' family came over for a day in the pool.

I had so much fun.

I didn't mind sweating.  I didn't mind getting the sunburn I now have on my shoulders.  I didn't mind getting up this morning despite being such a crazy, busy weekend.  In fact, I woke up in a great mood because of the crazy, busy, FUN weekend.

It made me realize that I want to spend more time doing fun family activities.  Especially if they involve some movement or working up a sweat.

Playing miniature golf really isn't considered much exercise... but I did work up a sweat.  Playing in the pool, like I did yesterday, can't really be considered much exercise... because there wasn't near enough swimming as I thought there would be.  I spent a lot of my time jumping from the diving board, lazing on the pool lounger, and talking to my mom.  But, I did swim several laps over the course of the day, and because of the heat when I wasn't in the pool - I was sweating.

All of that outdoor fun got me thinking.  I've been thinking about stuff like bike riding, using the net in our back yard for badminton and volleyball, play basketball in the front yard, and I'd really like to find somewhere where I could play some tennis.  Not sure why, but I used to love playing tennis as a kid and think I'd enjoy it now.

All stuff to do outside, despite the heat.  Which is weird for me.  I'm usually the person that wants to lock herself up during the summer months and not come out again until the air outside is back in to or below 70 degrees.

And, most of the activities I want to start doing on a regular basis don't really involve any money.  OK, I would need to buy a bike and tennis stuff... but the volleyball and badminton stuff we have.  Thanks to P-Momma (my pseudo mother-in-law) who gave us a whole backyard play set when we moved in.  And there's a basketball hoop that sits on our driveway.

One thing I have noticed about myself these past couple of days is that I want to exercise, but I don't want to do exercise that involves actually thinking about exercise.  Stuff like going to a gym or doing a work-out DVD.  In fact, the only real exercise that I want to do is walking/jogging.  That's more for the meditative qualities it used to provide.  I would really clear my head when I was out walking..then jogging.. and then running.  I didn't feel like I was exercising, back then, I felt like I was just letting off some stress.

That's the type of stuff I'm looking for now.

No crazy gym memberships.  No fancy exercise equipment.

I want to have some fun.  I want to enjoy spending time with my family.  And I want to work up a sweat in the process.  That's not too much to ask, is it?

I'm not going to lie.. I don't ever see myself becoming a person that's addicted to exercise.  Not in the formal sense of the word, anyway.  I know that I can become addicted to running.  I know that I can become addicted to finding activities that I enjoy.  But, as far as getting up every morning and going to a gym or plugging away at an exercise routine or program?  Yeah...don't see that happening any time soon.

Maybe that was my biggest problem with all the attempts I've made in the past in regards to my weight loss.  I've always tried what everyone else is doing.  I've always told myself that in order to lose weight I have to be doing some type of plan or program or certain types of exercises.  Is that really the case?  Can't a person just lose weight because she goes from a person that eats junk and doesn't do a whole lot of activity to a person that eats better and smaller portions and spends her time involved in a fun, active lifestyle?  I'd like to think so.

And I guess it's something I'm going to find out.

OK, so maybe this blog post isn't as much like my other post as I thought it would be... so the title and the rest of the stuff I said doesn't make as much sense, now. But, oh well.  It is what it is.

Till next time...

Working Up a Sweat... Family Fun Style...

Well, yesterday was a nice and sweaty day.  No, I didn't go for a long walk.  No, I didn't get in the pool and swim.  No, I didn't go to a gym or do any other exercise equipment.

I went and worked up a sweat playing miniature golf.

Don't laugh.  I'm serious.

In 90+ degree weather, playing on a course that's on a hill...it doesn't take much to work up a little sweat.  Or a lot of sweat in my case.

OK, so there wasn't any real athletic movement involved.  Swinging a club a few times at each of the 18 holes just doesn't count.  There's not really that much walking involved.  Taking a few steps to the next hole, and then a few steps as the ball moves closer to the hole doesn't count.

But, just standing there, in the direct sunlight...and the sweat was absolutely pouring off of me.

And it was so much fun.

Here's my little Jelly jumping for joy that she got the ball in the hole...

Here's my Hubby...with Jelly watching for techniques..HA!

Here's Butter making his shot for par.

And here's me..doing my thing.

It was such a fun afternoon, and completely unexpected to the kids.

But, it's the kind of stuff I want to be doing with my kids this summer.  Being outside, or maybe inside, enjoying family activities together.

I made a realization about myself yesterday.

Even though I feel like I've lost so much of the progress I made a few years ago, I realized that there's one thing I haven't lost.

The ability to be on my feet for more than a few minutes before I have to sit down and rest.  Especially out in the heat of a summer's day.

Three years ago, I'd have had to sit down between each hole and catch my breath.  Then again, I do spend each and every week day mostly on my feet while I'm at school.

It's become a routine, a norm...and something I just couldn't do three years ago.

It goes to show that if you continue to do something, it never leaves you.

I know it's not much to be proud of.  Whoopie, I can stand for more than a few minutes and walk for a few minutes without feeling winded or tired.

Not exactly prize earning.

But, it's important to me to be able to do fun activities with my kids.  Fun, on my feet...and even more... activities with my kids.

The only way to do that is to get my butt in gear and start moving more.

Today, I'm GOING to spend a couple of hours in the pool.  Exercising.  And having fun with my kids.  It's going to become a routine.  I'm going to make it happen.

Which I better do right now.

Till next time!

So. Hot. Must. Find. Water!

OK, so we're not even officially in to summer just yet, and I'm already going to start complaining about the weather.  Or, really, the heat.  Which is funny, because just a few weeks ago on my other blog, I was complaining that the temps were barely making it in to the 70's which wasn't right for May.

But, I'm not one of those people.  Not usually.

The kind that complains all winter about the cold and then complains all summer about the heat.  I'm only the latter version.  I will complain all summer about the heat...but you won't hear me complain (much) about the cold in the winter.  Because I'm a winter gal.

Although, that may change slightly, now that we have a huge pool in our back yard.

But this past week has been torture.  Temps in the 90's, beautiful cool pool in the back yard, and I've only been able to sit and watch as my children frolic and play in the refreshing water.

Why?

Because I'm being tormented by Aunt Flo...and the hag won't allow me to swim.

Yes, I know, there are certain things I can use so that I can swim, and all that.  But, I don't.  Can't, really.  It's personal, and I already feel like I've said too much... just know that when Aunt Flo is in town, I'm restricted to the sidelines to just watch the fun happening.

Thankfully, she should be packing her bags today...better be, anyway.

I've never wanted to jump in to a pool and swim and swim and swim some more so much before.  And no, not just lounge in the pool, actually get in it and work-out.  Run in the pool (which if freakin' hard!), swim in the pool, do lunges and jumps, and all kinds of fun, cool exercises.

Of course, most people want what they can't have.

The past couple of days teaching summer school have been EX-HAUS-TING.  I come home feeling every ounce of energy drained out me.  I wake up in the morning feeling like my legs could snap off at any moment.  And why?  Because I've done a little more physical activity which I'm used to...and by that I mean I've walked up and down the hallways several times in a day, and I've been on my feet all day.  Not anything major like actually working out.

Actually, the annoyance to the pain has been so bad, that I decided that I'd get up nice and early this morning and go for a brisk walk.  You know, while it was still cool enough to do so.  So, I'd actually get in some good exercise this morning and work out the kink in my legs.  But, wouldn't you know, I didn't wake up until after 9am and within two minutes of stepping outside, I was melting sweating.  One look at the pool made me realize, I'll just hold off until later and do the equivalent of a walk in the pool.

I know, the weather is a poor excuse for not getting out there.  Shame on me.  But, honestly, I just knew that if I did go out for the walk....it would totally drain me.  I have other plans for the day, that do involve some activity.  I know my limits, and unfortunately there isn't much depth to them.   That doesn't mean I won't get there, though.

My good friend, Cathy, left a comment yesterday about how amazing it was how quickly we lose the ability to perform certain things when we don't do them for a while.  Point was about exercise.  Which is so true... it really does suck how quickly you can go from running to barely able to walk very far.  Especially after how long it takes to go from walking to running in the first place.

It sure would be nice that if it took 3 months to walk to jog for a while, then it took 3 months to revert backwards.  If it took 1 year to run a mile, it took 1 year to not be able to run a mile.  And so on.  But, that's not the case at all.  You don't run for a month?  Don't expect to run very far when you start running again.  Just imagine if you haven't run in over a year!  I'm back at my original starting point... the point where a 15 minute walk took it's toll on me.

Anywho, back to the comment.  It's funny she said what she did, because it's the point I've been trying to pass on to my students this week....regardless of the hypocritical stance that played out this morning.

Many of them have complained about how it's too hot to go outside.  It's too hot to do anything but sit in the AC.  They don't want to play outside, they don't want to throw a frisbee around, and they certainly don't want to do anything that would work up a sweat.

Then, I let these words slip out of my mouth...

"Two years ago, I could run 3 miles non-stop as if were something like tying my shoe.  Then, I decided it was too hot to run, I was too tired to exercise, I couldn't be bothered.   Now, look at me.  Walking down the hallway breaks me in to a sweat and turns my breathing hard.  Do you want to end up like me?"

I kid you not, but after that little spill, there was genuine fear in some of their eyes.

Many of my students are athletes... basketball players, football players, track participants, dancers etc.  Those were the kids that jumped to their feet and started doing everything I asked them to do... no more whining.

Of course, unfortunately, there were several kids that it didn't phase them a bit.  And the sad reason for that?  They don't really do any physical activity...they're kinda already like me.  These were the kids that needed a little different motivation.  They weren't athletes, they didn't do any physical activity, they were under the impression that they had nothing to lose, cause they didn't have anything built up to lose.

That's a painful revelation.

That there are kids that don't do any form of physical activity, and are already in the mindset that they are perfectly OK with that... that maybe they're destined to be overweight and unfit for the rest of their lives.

So, a different kind of spill?

"I forgot to mention that up until two years ago, I looked the way I look now.  I had been that way my whole life.  I was teased as a kid, couldn't and wouldn't do sports, and then when I had kids of my own, I couldn't play with them because I was too heavy.  So, I decided to change.  I lost a lot of weight.  Just by doing simple things and changing the way I ate.  That's why I was able to work up to running... I couldn't do it on day one, but I did it after a while.  But, because I just gave up one day... I ended up right back where I started.  It's so hard to lose weight, but it can be done.  It's so hard to learn to run, but it can be done.  And it's so much easier to do when you're still young."

Didn't really have the impact that I expected it to... but it got me really thinking.

Maybe these kids have heard it all before... maybe these kids just don't care about what they're told.  It's so easy to hear people preach about losing weight... but who actually does it?

Even me sitting there rambling on about how I used to weigh a lot less, but then gained it all back.  What kind of role model is that?

It made me realize that losing this weight, again, and sticking with it this time is so much more important than what I originally intended it to be.

Several years ago, I made the decision to try and lose weight so that I could be a healthy teacher, and a good role model to my students.  I failed.  I ended up a fat teacher who was a hypocrite, because I preach healthy eating and exercise...and I'm 260lbs.

What if, I can still become a good role model to my students?  The students that need my help the most.  The students who are just like me.  They need a little shove in the right direction or need something that they can actually see rather than hear.  Maybe I could be that person?  Maybe I could transform in front of their eyes, showing them that it can be done...with a little hard work and dedication.

I don't know.

But, I will say that what I saw in the eyes of some of those kids yesterday is frightening.  I don't want kids being OK that they are overweight and sedentary.  It's not right.  All kids should be able to run around a playground carefree...not hiding out in a shady spot because they are sweating so bad from just being outside, never mind actually doing something that works up a sweat.

Is there something I can do to help them?  Even if it just means taking my own advice and not be a hypocrite?

And I guess that's all I'm going to say about that today....I've got some serious thinking to do about myself...

Till next time!

Holy Leg Pain and Fatigue, Batman!

OK, so for the past three weeks, I've been off work.  In that time, the amount of exercise I've done has consisted of getting out of bed, walking to the patio, unpacking a few boxes, doing a few loads of laundry, sweeping a few times, stacking a dishwasher, going grocery shopping a couple of times, taking two day trips, swimming a few laps in a pool, and then walking from the living room to my bed.

And that's not all in one day.

Throw in sitting and relaxing on the patio or the couch in between each of those activities...and stretch them all out over a three week time period.  That's how active I've been since walking out of school on the last day.

This morning, however, I feel like I've run a 5K.  A 5K after not doing any running for 2 years, and with not warming up or stretching beforehand.

Did I run a 5K?  Absolutely not.

In fact, the only thing I did yesterday was stay on my feet ALL DAY LONG...and walk up and down a few small hills several times.  That's it.  The only reason I broke a sweat was because it was 90 degrees outside, and I spent the entire afternoon outside.

However, when I got home, it took everything to keep my eyes open.  I was drained of every ounce of energy.  I ended up in bed by 8pm and when I woke up this morning, my legs are killing me!  As in, the feeling I described like I'd been running.

It blows my mind that after being off work for 3 weeks, and then going back for one day I can be so tired and exhausted...and in pain!

I'm teaching summer school right now, and for 12 days I will teach science in the morning and frisbee golf in the afternoon.  Yep, frisbee golf.  It's a fun, summery thing to do...and I think it's a great subject to get to teach during summer school.  Except that I'll be outside ALL afternoon in temps hovering right under the 100 degree mark.  I'll rotate classes every 30 minutes, so they won't be exposed to a dangerous amount of sunlight.. but me?  Well, there's shade, I guess.

Actually, I'm very excited to be teaching a sport for summer school.  What I didn't expect was how tired I'd feel after one day of being back.

The tiredness angers and excites me.

It angers me because it goes to show how being sedentary for three weeks...let alone two years...can have such an affect on unused muscles.  To think, two years ago, I was running 5Ks and feeling the rush and adrenaline that it brought.  Three weeks ago, I was on my feet for most of the day every day and didn't think a thing of it.

But, just 3 measly weeks of being off work?  I can't even stand on my feet for more than a few hours without feeling like I've done way more than I've done.

It's pathetic.

But, it also excites me.  I have the opportunity to teach a sport for the next two weeks.  As in, I kinda get to be a coach.  OK, frisbee golf isn't the most active sport in the world... but it does require quite a bit of walking and throwing.  Better than nothing, right?  Especially when it's 90+ degrees outside, and I can't very well have kids running around in that type of heat.  And what an easy way to ease myself in to getting some exercise.

I had no idea that I'd be teaching what I'm teaching at summer school.  I was thrown in to it yesterday, so I wasn't exactly dressed for it.  Today, I'm going to dust off my tennis shoes, put on some shorts and a t-shirt, and get out there and get to it.

Another thing I'm also preparing for is staying hydrated.  I know that some of my fatigue, and possibly my muscle pains this morning is because I didn't drink enough water yesterday.  That's not happening today.  I've got my water bottle ready to go...and I plan on draining it several times.

It's a small start.  A very small start.  But, more than I have been doing.  It will at least help me get used to being out in the heat, again, and working some muscles that haven't gotten any form of work in way too long.

Right now, I have to hobble in and get ready.  Another day awaits.  And, I'm actually looking forward to it.

Till next time!

Time to Get Started

Well, I'm back again today.  That's a good sign, right?  Apparently I want to try and write here every day... because that's kinda how I am.  Writing helps.  A lot.

After finishing up my first post, yesterday, I decided that I needed to take care of a few things to really get myself in gear.  First thing was creating a "Brief History" page for any newcomers.  Even though I'm starting this blog completely over, I'd like to let people know that I've been here and done this before.  It's more of an accountability thing than anything else.  I don't want to give the impression that I'm new at this, and haven't struggled for years and years with my weight.

It's mostly for three reasons:

1.  I don't want to confuse new readers when I ever refer to my blogging about weight loss in the past.  I think it's only right that new readers are a little aware of my back story and what I'm bringing to the table.

2.  If I do finally succeed at losing the weight and keeping it off, I don't want people to think that this is when I first started and succeeded.  I think everyone should know that I'm not one of those people that can decide one day to lose the weight and do it in a matter of a few months.  It's been an adult life-long struggle, and I want that to be clear so that there are no misconceptions.  That's the honest thing to do...and that's just how I roll.

3.  I want readers to know at one point, I did have a lot of success with my weight loss.  But, because I didn't stick with it and let bad situations take over, I lost all of my progress.  Weight loss is a life-long battle, and not something that can be obtained and completed in a matter of months.

The other thing I realized I needed to do was take some "Before" pictures.  Oh, how I hate taking pictures.  In fact, for the past year or so, I haven't taken many pictures of myself...and the ones I have taken are mostly head shots.

This is why...

Yep.  That's me.  As of yesterday.  Excuse the towel on my head... I'd just taken a shower, and figured it the perfect time to capture some pictures of me in all of my glory.

My starting weight is 260lbs.  I'm not proud of that number.  Not by any means.  I've gained about 10lbs since January...and 40lbs more since 2011 for a total gain of 50lbs in the past 2 years.

It's a hard pill to swallow, cause had I lost those 50lbs in the past two years... I'd be at my goal weight.   Or at least pretty darn close.  I weighed 212lbs in May, 2011.  Had I lost another 50lbs since then, I would be teetering around 160lbs.. which is my ultimate goal weight.  Well, the weight my doctor told me I should be.

But, one thing I'm going to have to do if I truly want to start over is quit beating myself up for my past mistakes.  They're done and over with. There's nothing I can do now, except lose the weight again.  I've done it before, I can do it again.

This time, though, I don't have school AND work... I just have my dream job.  I don't have the stress and worry of hating my living situation... I have my dream house.  There's absolutely nothing standing in my way...except... myself.  I either do it or I don't.  Right?

Yesterday, I was proud of myself.  I started the day out with a Greek Yogurt.  And water.  Lunch was a noodle bowl.  And water.  Dinner was chicken fajita salad.  And water.  And then more water.  I ended the day with another Greek yogurt.  And more water.

I don't have any form of "plan" that I'm going to use.  I'm just going to stick with what's tried and true... watching what I eat, keeping an eye on my calorie intake, and avoiding junk food.  Oh, and drinking lots of water.

Exercise will come.  Soon.  How can it not with such a wonderful in-ground pool in my backyard?  No excuses there... swimming is one of my most favorite things to do.  I have to wait for a couple more days before I can get back to swimming, due to a monthly visitor... but until then, I'll be teaching summer school and getting in a ton of exercise running around with kids all day.

Which, actually, I need to get ready for right now.

Till next time....

Oh Yeah.... I'm BAAAAAACCCCCKKKK!!!

Holy crap balls, you have no idea how weird I feel typing these words right now.  Do you know how long it's been?  No.  Seriously... do you know?  Cause I have no freakin' idea.  It's been so long, that I considered changing my name to Old, Mad, Fat Woman.  But, that's a little wordy, don't ya think?

Who am I even talking to?

Is there anyone still out there?  Hello?  Echo? Echo?

That's OK, I'm quite used to talking to myself.  It's just how I get things done.  Having inner and outer conversations with oneself is not a sign of madness.  I don't care what anyone says.  It's a sign that I just love the sound of my own voice, and I have to be listening to it constantly.  Either on the inside or the outside.

So, I know what you're all thinking....(by all I mean just about anyone reading this right now.  Even me)

Why on earth did I come back?

The truth?  Because I'm a Mad, Fat Woman again.  Like a total replica.  Not as heavy as I once was many years ago, but as heavy as I was when I first got serious about being "The Mad, Fat Woman".

All 260lbs of her.

Yikes.  That's tough to share.  But, one thing you all know about this woman is that I'm honest.  Upfront.  I tell it like it is.

Well, maybe you don't know that.  Maybe you have no idea who the heck I am and have never read a single thing I've ever written before.  In that case HIYA!! Thanks for stopping by.  I'm a very large gal on a mission to lose weight... for the upteen billionth time.

One thing I have continued to do since my hiatus from this blog is stay caught up on the goings on of my favorite weight loss bloggers.

One thing I've noticed is that my blog roll list is so much shorter than it was the last time I was here.  I've noticed that several of the weight loss bloggers I wrote along side a couple of years ago have disappeared.  No notice.  No explanation.  Just gone.

And then, there are those that have stayed true and faithful to their dedication and commitments.  The changes I've seen in those people are extraordinary.  And, whether they'll read this or hear about this I don't know, but they are the reason I'm back.  They never gave up... they stuck with it... they continued to pump me each day with motivation that one day I would return.  Not only return, but for once.. succeed.

Another thing I've continued to do since my hiatus is continue to blog.  You may already know that if you followed me to the new blog I created.  It's called Life and Times of Jo.  I switched the Mad, Fat Woman off and just became me.  A regular gal who blogs about life in general.  The kids.  Home life.  Work life.  Recounts of my daily life.

But, there was always something missing.  Always a part of me that was yearning for something more. Something that felt like it was dangling from a piece of thread that was either waiting to be repaired of just cut off and put out of it's misery.

A few days ago, I realized that it wasn't too far gone to repair.

So, I'm going to try it.  Again.  To repair the serious defect plaguing my life.

My weight.

When I first became the Mad, Fat Woman.  I was a student in college.  A student in college that was juggling school, working a part-time job, then switching to student teaching, raising three kids, and being a good fiancĂ© to my Hubby.  Even with all that going on in my life, I completed a fitness boot camp, I became a runner, I learned the importance of using food as fuel rather than comfort, and I lost over 80lbs.

But then, I graduated from college and my life changed.  When I thought I would leave college and have a job handed to me on a silver platter, reality set in that finding a teaching job in my area wasn't as easy as I thought.  I couldn't find a teaching job, and the stress it took on me was devastating.  It started to slowly eat away at me... causing me to eat away.  And eat some more.  And even more.

Until, eventually all that hard work I had done started to crumble away and disintegrate into nothingness.

It took an entire year before I actually found a teaching job.  But, I did.  Last May.  I was hired in a school district right across the state line.  I'm now a 4th grade teacher, and I have loved every single day of my first year teaching.

Not only that, but I tackled the other major stressor in my life:  Finding and buying a new house.

It was my dream to accomplish three things after graduating.  First, get a teaching job.  Then, buy a brand new car.  Then, eventually, buy a new house that was everything that Hubby and I wanted in a house.

Who would have thought that in a mere year I would accomplish all of those things?

I started my new job last August.  I bought a brand new Kia Sorento in October of last year.  And exactly one month ago, Hubby and I closed on the house of our dreams.  A huge 4 bedroom/2 bath home that sits on almost an acre of land and comes with a fantastic in-ground pool.

Life couldn't be more perfect.

Except for one thing....my weight.  Well, and my fitness level.

I'm no longer a runner.  I'm not even a walker.  I'm no longer sporting my curvy waistline, but hiding bulges under baggy t-shirts and shorts.  And, it's just not supposed to be that way.

I've managed to check off every single item on the list of life goals in a matter of one year... all except that dreaded weight loss.  That one still stares me in the face each time I glance in to a mirror or large window.  It haunts me each time I pull out an outfit from my closet and see bags and bags of clothes that once fit me...and made me look fabulous.

And I realized, I just couldn't stand it anymore.  Again.

So, after much inner deliberation and arguing... The Mad, Fat Woman returns.  The sequel.  The new chapter.  Whatever you want to call it.  All of my old blog posts still reside on my other blog.  I contemplated moving them back over here... but I don't need them.  This is a fresh start, and with a fresh start comes building from the ground up.  Not trying to rebuild on once was.

So, here I am.  Back.  I have 100lbs to lose to get to goal weight.  I have to start over with accomplishing any level of fitness.  It's back to walking before I can run.  But, run I will.  Again.  Eventually.

I haven't decided if this will become a daily blog.  I haven't decided when I'll share weigh-in updates.  I haven't decided on whether I'll post pictures.  Or should I say when I'll post pictures.  I'm just taking this one day at a time.  It's all I can do.

But... hopefully you've missed me.  Hopefully you're up for supporting me once again.  Hopefully you're interested in at least seeing what I have to say when I say it.

Hopefully this was a good enough introduction post.

That's all for now.

Till next time....
